It is hard to believe, but it has been 18 years since I started working with my first gallery, The Darryl Nantais Gallery, near Cambridge, England! Like all of us, the gallery has grown and been through changes in the intervening years; after becoming very active on the UK art fair circuit and opening a sister gallery, DNG Contemporary, in Auchterarder, Scotland, they rebranded to Linton59 and although the original gallery near Cambridge is now closed, they continue to take work to art fairs around the UK and still run the gallery in Scotland.

"Boats at Sunset" (54x44cm) and "Boats On The Estuary" (74x62cm)

From Cambridge to Mountains, Plains and the Sea

In those 18 years, my life's changed a lot too! From the moment I first turned up on their doorstep with a car-load of paintings, husband and toddler in tow, Linton59 gallery continued to support me through every big move I made.

Through my country changes from England to Switzerland and a few years later on to Spain, I continued to send collections of paintings and they took my paintings to national art fairs all over the UK. This was so important for me and helped give me the confidence I needed to decide to make art my full time career.

"The Flow 1" (89x69cm. Framed), "By The Water's Edge" (78x78cm. Framed) and "Allure 3" (100x100cm)

You can really see how my approach to landscape painting has changed over the years! They were originally very observational (for example, the boats) and based on my new life in England. After moving to Spain, where we initially lived near Aranjuez, in the very centre of the country, I started using gold leaf to represent the intensity of the sun and began to imagine the landscapes that I wanted live in, away from the incredible, never-ending heat of the summers.

"Endless Moments 2" (100x100cm), "The View From Above" (81x65cm and "Despite The Weather 1 (80x80cm)

The Abstract Landscape of Asturias

After finally moving to the coast of beautiful, temperate Asturias up in the far north of Spain, my work began to take on a more emotional, abstracted perspective. Rather than painting what I was seeing or imagining what I wanted to see, I was able to paint what I felt about the landscape around me. I began using more geometric elements to both indicate connections to the familiar aspects of my new surroundings, and also to provide a sense of multidimensionality that I hadn't been able to express before; a perspective that was simultaneously close-up and intimate, yet also somewhat detached, almost aerial and removed from the daily hubbub of the local culture.

As time passes, and my life here becomes more integrated, I will be interested to see how this affects my art and my abstract landscapes.
