The Essence of Abstraction: Finding Freedom in the Undefined
My passion for abstract art is rooted in my earliest creative foundations. Guided by a university professor who was an abstract artist himself, I was encouraged to look past the literal and embrace the experimental. This journey is deeply influenced by the Polish post-war avant-garde, particularly the pioneering works of Magdalena Abakanowicz and Teresa Pągowska.
For me, there is a profound sense of delight and mental freedom in the obscure. I believe that by deliberately leaving certain elements to the imagination, I can communicate far more than I ever could by focusing on minute details.
Capturing Sensation: The "Feeling" of a Moment
A flat canvas has its limits, and it can never truly capture every tiny detail of a real-life experience. Because of this, I prefer to focus on the sensation of a moment rather than its literal appearance. My goal is to translate the unique atmosphere of a memory into shapes and colours, prioritising how it feels to exist in a specific time and place. By leaving certain elements undefined, I hope to let the viewer step into the work and finish the story with your own imagination.
A "Curious" Approach to Mixed Media
I refuse to limit my practice to a single medium. Instead, I have spent years playfully experimenting with how different materials interact, learning to replicate the "happy accidents" that occur when textures collide. This constant curiosity results in a variety of flavours within my work.
My process is a constant cycle of discovery. At times, I dive deep into pure abstraction to let my imagination take the lead. At other times, I feel a pull to return to more tangible forms, returning to reality as a way of marking my presence in the world. Whether I am working with bold colours or subtle textures, my goal is always to find something new.
I want to paint how it feels to exist in a moment, not just how that moment looks. There is a beautiful freedom in the undefined.
