Living near Villaviciosa (Asturias), when family visits us and asks, "Where can we see the mountains around here?" we don't just point vaguely into the distance and say, "Oh, over there", we take them somewhere spectacular, like Mirador del Fitu.
Located just a few kilometres inland from Colunga, Mirador del Fitu is a popular viewpoint 578m above sea level, with 360 degree views spanning the Asturian coastline to the North all the way around to the dramatic Picos de Europa to the South.
We visited it on an unseasonably warm morning in late October... t-shirt weather (we even went for a swim later that day!) after being asked if there was somewhere close to home where we could go to see the mountains.
Standing there, with the mist gently lifting off the hills, I felt this urge to capture the way the light played with the landscape. I think moments like this remind us how lucky we are to live in a place where the mountains and the sea come together in such a magical way.
If you ever find yourself near Villaviciosa, don’t just look at the mountains from a distance -go and experience them. It’s worth it! It didn't disappoint and provided the inspiration for a new painting "Rising Mist"
